Our beloved Mom, Nana, "Little" Nana, Juanita Salazar Manjarres, 97, passed away February 21, 2025 at home after 5 weeks of Hospice Care. She was born in Bisbee on June 22, 1927, and raised in Naco, Son, Mex. Preceded in death by her husband, Frank D. Manjarres, mother-in-law, Isabel, eldest son, Mike, infant daughter, Maria, and son-in-law, Bill Riley. Also preceded in death by parents, Margarito and Paula Salazar and siblings Antonio (Conchita), Mariana (Dagoberto) Bernal, Margarito (Socorro) and Jesus (Emma). Juanita & Frank "Kico" raised their eleven children in Bisbee; Mike (Molly Ann), Sylvia Riley, Frank Jr (Annette), John (Lucinda), Norma (James) Sykes, David (John), Isabel (Jimmy) Chavez, Alicia (Dan) Margritz, Paula (Roger) Abbott, Cecilia (Lori) and Christina (Peter) Fimbres. She was blessed with twenty grandchildren, thirty-four great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. She had numerous nephews, nieces, grand and great grands.
Juanita worked hard her entire life. At one time owned and operated La Poblana Tortilla Factory located in Lowell. She filled orders for local restaurants, schools, and customers. It ran successfully until health issues caused the sale of the business. But she remained positive and never complained.
Although she did not have the same educational opportunities as her children, she encouraged all to go to college and saw this as a path to success. She was very proud of all her childrens', grandchildrens' and great grandchildrens' accomplishments.
Juanita moved to Tucson in 1989 and to Oro Valley in 2005.
As a very devout woman, she watched the Mass and Rosary daily and until recently followed along with prayers on the screen. She watched, listened to and sang Mariachi music daily. Her favorite games to play were Backgammon, Yahtzee, Dice Game and Shanghai Rummy. As a great cook, all enjoyed her homemade meals and no one left her home hungry.
A tradition she loved was an annual Tamale Fest held at her home every December where generations gathered to make tamales for Christmas. She insisted some be cooked right away for "quality control". She participated in this on Dec 14 th , 2024. This tradition will go on for generations.
Mom, Nana, "Little" Nana will be dearly missed as a kind, humble, gentle, compassionate
person who made each one of us feel like we were her favorite. She was beautiful inside and out. Her legacy will continue through all her descendants.
A special thank you to her two caregivers Maria Urbalejo Gastelum and Linda Vasas.
